Fellow parishioner John Pflug will be ordained a permanent deacon of the Archdiocese at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia Cathedral this coming Saturday, May 1st, and the ordination will be livestreamed at the link below.
We will also host a Mass of Thanksgiving here at Christ the King on Sunday, May 2nd, at 10 a.m. This will be the first time John fully serves as a deacon at a Mass. A reception for all will follow this special Mass in the Parish Center. We are so proud of John and for his “yes” to the Lord. We hope you can attend the Mass of Thanksgiving and celebrate this great gift to our parish and to the Archdiocese. It’s another mile-stone in the history of our parish: We will have three active deacons serving at Christ the King! What a blessing!

John and Sue Pflug registered in Christ the King in April of 1995. John has been married 34 years to his wife, Sue, and they have two sons, six daughters; and eight grandchildren. John works in the financial ser-vices industry. John and Sue are very involved in the caring work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and John has spent many years volunteering in youth-related ministries, particularly chaperoning teens to the summer Steubenville conferences.
About the call to the diaconate, John says: “As I look back, this journey has been longer than I realized at first – but that is a story I will tell to those who ask. The heat really got turned up on my call when I start-ed working with teens of the Archdiocese of Omaha 15 years ago and started attending Franciscan Uni-versity Steubenville conferences with them. The pres-ence of the Holy Spirit was so magnified I could no longer deny or try to avoid what the Lord was asking of me – to serve his church in a more formal and de-liberate way. I guess you could say ordination into the permanent diaconate puts an exclamation point at the end of the previous sentences and this one.”
After ordination, John has various plans: “I will serve at the desire of the Archbishop, which I anticipate, to begin, will be to serve at my home parish of Christ the King in the way my pastor determines will best serve the people of Christ the King, both in the church and outside the church, both Catholic and non-Catholic, as the permanent diaconate is really a call to service. I would like to continue to be involved in youth ministry and help with St. Vincent de Paul and other ministries helping the poor and forgotten of our society, but I al-so feel a call to be involved in some type of healing ministry.”
